What a VIN can — and can't — tell you about towing capacity

Your VIN may report

  • Model year, make, and model identity
  • Engine family and displacement clues
  • Reported drive type (4x4, 4x2, AWD)
  • Cab and body descriptions, which may be broader than the towing chart

Your VIN can't reveal

  • Axle ratio — the single biggest capacity swing factor
  • Factory tow packages (e.g. Max Trailering, Trailer Tow)
  • Installed options that change GCWR
  • Any towing number itself

That's why this tool works in two steps: a successful decode identifies the supported make, model, and year, then the lookup applies only unambiguous attributes and leaves the other clues for you to confirm. Can I find my exact towing capacity by VIN?

Partially. A successful supported decode identifies the model year, make, and model. It may also report engine, drive type, and body clues, but those fields do not always map one-to-one to the manufacturer’s towing-chart vocabulary. This page prefills only values that map unambiguously to one published lookup facet and leaves the rest for you to confirm.

Why doesn't my VIN reveal my axle ratio or tow package?

The 17-character VIN encodes model attributes, the assembly plant, and a serial number — not the full build sheet. Your axle ratio is printed as an axle code on the driver-side door-jamb certification label, and factory tow packages appear on the original window sticker or build sheet.

Is this VIN towing capacity checker free?

Yes. Your browser sends the VIN directly to the free public NHTSA vPIC database; TowingIQ does not put it in this page’s URL or store it. Every towing figure on this site comes from manufacturer-published towing guides.
